“Dominion Road is a much loved and characterful part of our city. This character is in large part due to the diverse mixture of businesses that line the street. Increased capacity in public transport is undoubtedly crucial to the development of the city and Dominion Road in particular. This step in the development of the city needs to be taken, and soon.
But it is worthwhile considering each transport option available and what impact each option will have on Dominion Road’s businesses, otherwise we run the risk of losing some of what makes the street special. One option that hasn’t been widely considered as yet is Trackless Trams.
This option can provide the same capacity as more conventional light rail, but requires less disruption as extensive construction work isn’t required. This in turn, produces less disruption for businesses and faster use of the system for patrons. The reduced cost, when compared with conventional rail options, also raises the question of other improvements that can be made along the street with the savings made. These could help foster quality urban spaces that support increasingly dense development along the arterial route.

Our images show a vision for Dominion Road which includes Trackless Trams, with existing landmarks retained alongside development facilitated by reliable public transport. “
